On Friday, July 10, Sandersville drivers will see traffic slow on State Route 242 (Bartow Road) in the ongoing Phase 1 Truck Route intersection area.
Contractors will full-depth-widen up to the existing state highway. Traffic control is set to include flagging stations and a pilot vehicle to protect the public and crew members.
Weather permitting, work will begin on Friday, July 10, pause for the weekend, then return on Monday, July 13 to run through Friday, July 17.
General work hours are 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
State Route 242 is currently two (2) travel lanes, but will be widened to include a center left turn lane for east bound traffic to make a left turn onto the truck route when complete.
In early November of 2018, G.P.’s Enterprises began construction activities on the $24.1 million Sandersville Truck Route, one of the major regional Transportation Investment Act (TIA) projects passed by Central Savannah River Area voters in 2012. The project is fully funded by TIA proceeds.
The project includes 4.585 miles of lane widening and reconstruction that establishes a new location of State Route 15 just east of Ridge Road on State Route 242, and extends generally along Ridge Road to State Route 15 north of Sandersville. The typical section will consist of four (4) lanes with a raised median from State Route 242 to Sisters Church Creek, and four (4) lanes with a flush median from that point to the north end.
In addition to the roadway improvements, work features a new bridge/approaches over the Sandersville Railroad and a multi-lane roundabout at the intersection of the Fall Line Freeway.
Additionally, weather permitting, Norfolk Southern will begin East Elm Street/US 319 railroad crossing repairs on Monday, July 13, requiring the use of an off-site detour around the downtown area.
Railroad crews should complete work by the morning of Wednesday, July 15.
The crews will also perform minor work on the adjacent State Route 57 crossing. Vehicles will be able to move through the area, but may be stopped by a flagger at times.
The official signed detour will utilize Wiggins Street and State Route 57.
