On Thursday, July 16, the Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA) announced that Brentwood School was the co-recipient of the Michael Drake Athletic Excellence Award, which recognizes the top school in overall athletic performance in each GISA classification.

This is the fourth time that Brentwood has been presented with the Michael Drake Award.

Brentwood was bestowed the GISA AA title in 2015, 2017, and 2018, as well.

The Michael Drake Athletic Excellence Award is given to the GISA school who accumulates the most points throughout a given school year. Points are awarded for performance in all GISA sanctioned athletic events.

Brentwood’s point total equaled that of Gatewood School this past school year, and the two Middle Georgia competitors were deemed co-champions. Gatewood, of Eatonton, also won the Michael Drake Award in 2019.

Across the spectrum of GISA athletic functions that were played in the shortened 2019-2020 school year, Brentwood School accumulated the following results:

Girls Cross Country – GISA AA Region 4 Runner-Up & GISA AA State Championship

Boys Cross Country – GISA AA Region 4 Runner-Up & GISA AA State Competition 5th Place Finish

Girls Basketball – GISA AA Region 4 Championship & GISA AA State Semifinal berth

Boys Basketball – GISA AA Region 4 Runner-Up & GISA AA State Quarterfinal berth

Cheerleading – GISA AA State Competition 9th Place Finish

Football – GISA AA Region 4 Championship & GISA AA State Semifinal berth

Softball – GISA AA Region 4 Runner-Up & GISA AA State Quarterfinals berth

Clay Target – GISA AA State Competition 8th Place Finish

The baseball, golf, boys tennis, girls tennis, boys track, and girls track seasons were ended prior to postseason play and potential point earning opportunities after schools transitioned to a virtual learning format in March, due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I am very proud of our staff and students for the time and effort each of them put in to make winning this award possible,” said Brentwood Athletic Director Adam Lord. “Brentwood has a longstanding tradition of being competitive with all our athletic teams. It just speaks volumes how our students are able to win these athletic awards while also maintaining academic success.”

The award for the top athletic performing school for each GISA classification is named after Dr. Michael Drake, who served as the Georgia Independent School Association Executive Director from 2001 – 2009.
