Washington County High School has announced their revised football schedule for the upcoming season.
Alterations to the schedule were needed following the Georgia High School Association’s (GHSA) decision to delay the official start of the 2020 football season by two (2) weeks, due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. On Monday, July 20, the GHSA voted to push back the first available date for regular season games to Friday, September 4.
Football season is scheduled to conclude with eight (8) state championship games being played across three (3) days on December 28, 29, and 30 at Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta.
The Georgia High School Association did not alter the schedules of any other Fall sports for the looming 2020-2021 school year. Additional Fall season sports include cheerleading, cross country, fast-pitch softball, and volleyball.
Practice dates were not altered during the GHSA Board of Trustees meeting from earlier this week, and can begin on Monday, July 27. Full pads may be added on Saturday, August 1.

The forthcoming Washington County (WACO) season comes off the heels of a 7 win, 4 loss 2019 campaign that saw the Golden Hawks make the GHSA AA State Playoffs. It ended at the hands of the Brooks County Trojans, who eventually advanced to the GHSA AA State Championship Game. The Trojans lost to the Dublin Fighting Irish, a longtime WACO rival, who the Golden Hawks defeated 27-23 in the season’s final regular season game. The Dublin loss would be the only blemish on a state title winning season.
For Washington County, Head Coach Joel Ingram is prepared to lead the Golden Hawks in a 15th consecutive season. Coach Ingram’s squads have won an average of over 8 games per season in his previous 14 campaigns at the helm of the historic Middle Georgia powerhouse.
The Washington County Board of Education has scheduled the first day of school for Friday, August 7. The Board of Education is offering three (3) learning options for the 2020-2021 school year. Choices include a traditional format (100% in-person learning), a blended remote format (100% virtual learning), and a hybrid format (3 days per week in-person learning /2 days per week virtual learning.)
Washington County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rickey Edmond and the Board of Education state that students may participate in available extracurricular activities regardless of their learning option choice.
The Georgia High School Association claims that each school district will make individual decisions concerning athlete COVID-19 testing, in-person fan attendance, and concession stands.
