A 19-year-old male who sustained a gunshot wound to the head on the evening of Tuesday, December 29 has died, according to Washington County Coroner E.K. May.
The victim was identified as Isaiah Thomas.
According to Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran, Deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to an address on Bartow-Dublin Road at approximately 6:50 p.m. Tuesday evening in reference to a shooting.
The victim, 19-year-old Thomas, suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. He was airlifted to a hospital in Macon. He was on life support in the early hours of Wednesday, December 30, but was pronounced dead around 9:45 a.m.
“It’s tragic,” said Sheriff Cochran. He added, “This is another unnecessary tragedy for our community; an innocent loss of life and another life damaged at the hands of gunfire.”
One person was detained on Tuesday evening in connection to the shooting, but has since been released.
“At this point, it appears to be an accidental shooting, but we are still reviewing things,” said Sheriff Cochran.
According to Sheriff Cochran, the investigation is ongoing.
Sheriff Cochran explained that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators.
“We will continued to pray for the families that are affected by the tragedy,” said Washington County Sheriff Cochran.
