Sandersville City Council approved the 2021 – 2026 Washington County Joint Comprehensive Plan during a Tuesday, June 29 called City Council meeting.
The five-year plan was completed and updated cooperatively with the Washington County Board of Commissioners, the City of Davisboro, the Town of Deepstep, the Town of Harrison, the City of Oconee, the Town of Riddleville, the City of Sandersville, and the City of Tennille.
The Comprehensive Plan includes a community work program that outlines specific activities/projects that each jurisdiction plans to undertake over the five-year period. The work program within the plan features a description of the activity, a timeframe for completion, parties responsible for implementation, a cost estimate, and a funding source. The work program is categorized into subsets – economic development, housing, community facilities, natural and cultural resources, land use, and broadband.
Some of the projects identified by the City of Sandersville in the Joint Comprehensive Plan include the following:
– Economic Development: Promote the City’s Retail Incentive Program, fund the Façade Incentive Program, develop walking mural trail, expand the farmer’s market, maintain a dynamic up-to-date website and social media outlets, and develop a plan to invigorate downtown Sandersville based on community feedback, focusing on immediate, small improvements to the area followed by larger-scale investment where appropriate.
– Housing: Assess sites for future housing including vacant property suitable for housing and lots suitable for affordable housing
– Community Facilities: Brick sidewalk from CVS to the Post Office, improve sidewalks downtown surrounding Thiele Park, Police Department will lease/purchase seven police vehicles and conversions, upgrade the Morningside Drive sewer lift station, correct flood, storm drainage, roadway and other infrastructure in the Tybee Community, and apply for grant funds for water, sewer, flood and draining, and roadway improvements.
– Natural and Cultural Resources: Support the Kaolin Festival
– Land Use: Review and revise the zoning map
– Broadband: Identify community-based buildings that would benefit from enhanced broadband and/or could be considered for Broadband Ready designation, and provide wi-fi in public areas like Thiele Park, Depot Disc Golf Course, etc.
During the Tuesday, June 29 called meeting, the Sandersville City Council voted to adopt the five-year Joint Comprehensive Plan.
