The condition of Jones Road was the topic of discussion during a Wednesday, July 21 Board of Commissioners called meeting.
Commissioners met with representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation and G.P.’s Enterprises regarding the current state of Jones Road.
Commissioners cited repeated truck travel as the culprit for the damaged road which has numerous potholes and pavement failure.
“The citizens want to know how the road will be kept up until there’s a permanent fix,” said County Commissioner Edward Burten, who represents District Two.
Chairman Daniel stated that he had spoken with the school system regarding bus routes for the upcoming school year, and reported to his fellow Commissioners that he was told parents/guardians would be required to take their children to the end of the road in order for the buses to pick them up in the mornings.
“Some of the potholes are so bad that the kids could be knocked out of their seats,” said Chairman Daniel.
A representative from G.P.’s Enterprises was contacted via telephone during the called meeting; G.P’s is in the process of hauling dirt from a site off Jones Road.
“We never want to leave something in worse shape than we found it,” said the representative from G.P.’s. He noted that they are still in the process of hauling dirt, and that typically repairs are made once a project is complete.
When asked what solution the County would like to see, Commissioners agreed that they would like to see the road resurfaced.
G.P.’s agreed to provide a written proposal concerning temporary repairs and long-term solutions for Jones Road to the County. The Commissioners asked that a representative from G.P.’s attend the County’s next scheduled meeting on Thursday, August 12 at 9 a.m.
