The much anticipated and highly awaited return of football for Washington County Golden Hawks fans was set to expire this weekend in the 2021 regular season opener versus the rival Baldwin Braves of Milledgeville.
Golden Hawk faithful will now have to wait a little longer for their squad to lock horns on the gridiron and kickstart their latest campaign.
On Wednesday, August 25, it was announced that the 43rd all-time matchup between the longtime border foes would be postponed.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we have postponed this Friday’s game,” reads a statement from the Washington County Public Schools, GA Facebook page. “This will allow us to partner with the local health department to provide vaccines to interested parents and students prior to our next game.”
The contest, originally scheduled for Friday, August 27, was to be the opener of the WACO football season. Baldwin began their run last Friday night with a 42-6 rout at home versus Liberty County.
For Washington County, the next scheduled game and new season starter will be a game on Friday, September 3, against nemesis Thomson. The Bulldogs will hold host to the Golden Hawks in the 41st contest of the series at the historic Brickyard Stadium.
The updated home opener for WACO will be on Friday, September 10, versus the Swainsboro Tigers, when the Washington County High School will debut their new scoreboard at the House of Pain.
A September season start date is unfortunately not unfamiliar territory for Washington County, who will eventually be led into action by Head Coach Joel Ingram, a man entering his 16th year at the helm of the Hawks. COVID-19 delayed the start of all Georgia high school football a year ago. WACO began their campaign against Swainsboro on September 11, the latest date for an opener in Golden Hawks history.
Having a game altered or postponed is also nothing new for Coach Ingram and his squad. The 2020 start with Swainsboro was a game constructed the week of the contest. The Golden Hawks were scheduled to face Burke County on a Friday night before the Bears were forced to cancel due to COVID.
Fans who purchased tickets to the now postponed WACO vs. Baldwin game through the GoFan ticket app or website will be refunded, stated Washington County Public Schools in their Wednesday social media post.
Washington County Golden Hawks football will not return this week, but when it finally does, it will be heard on the longtime “Home of the Hawks.”
WACO 100 will once again be on the call of each and every exciting game in the 2021 season. Fans will be able to listen in on all contests at 99.9 FM and waco100fm.com. The “Voice of the Hawks” Taylor Everett will begin each “Football Friday Night’s” coverage beginning at 7:00 P.M.
