In an abundance of caution, many in Washington County are making safety preparations for the expected heavy rainfall and strong winds entering the area from Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm on Wednesday.

All Washington County Governmental offices will be closed on Friday, September 30, due to the anticipated inclement weather.

On Tuesday, Washington County Public Schools announced the shift to “at-home learning” for students on Friday. In-person school related activities will be rescheduled or cancelled.

The Board of Education states that following an assessment of the storm’s impact on school operations, a decision will be made during the coming weekend if virtual learning will continue on Monday, October 3. Parents/guardians are asked to monitor Parent Square, Washington County Public Schools, GA Facebook, the school district website, and local media for updates.

The Washington County Golden Hawks football game versus Lucy C. Laney High School has been rescheduled to Thursday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the House of Pain.

Brentwood School also made the choice on Monday to reschedule their Annual Homecoming football game against Briarwood to Thursday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. In the event that weather plays a factor, Homecoming festivities will precede the game at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Glascock County Public Schools have cancelled classes, all school-related activities, and their afterschool program originally scheduled for Friday. Current plans are to resume classes/activities on Monday. Administration will monitor weekend weather conditions and alert parents/guardians via the Glascock County Facebook page and local media if reopening is postponed.

Additionally, Washington EMC has cancelled their Annual Meeting that was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 1. The cooperative asks that the public contact Washington EMC at 478-552-2577 for further information.
