Marvin William Alston, Jr., age 85, of Sandersville peacefully passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 2:00 P.M. in the Sandersville United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Heritage Hall.
Mr. Alston was born in Sandersville, the son of the late Marvin Alston, Sr. and the late Frances Thigpen Alston. He was a graduate of the Sandersville High School in 1956 and the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1960 with a degree in Industrial Management. Marvin began his working career in communications at Southern Bell and BellSouth. Mr. Alston later worked as a Noted Auditor with AT&T in New York City. He retired in 1995 from employment in Atlanta and returned to his beloved hometown. Marvin was proud of his Sandersville roots and involved in numerous community projects, including the Downtown Development Authority and the Sandersville Farmers Market. Mr. Alston served as Treasurer of the Sandersville United Methodist Church for seventeen years and was a devoted choir member. He was an avid sports fan, frequently attending the Masters Golf Tournament and Washington County High School and Georgia Tech football games. Marvin enjoyed farming and most cherished his time spent with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 60 years, Joanna McElrath Alston; children, Jane Alston, Anna Alston, and Joe Alston; and grandchildren, Jonathan Powell, Leo Powell, and Frances Lozensky.
