The latest in a string of year-long alleged prison “drone drops” has resulted in the arrests of two additional individuals.

This year, 13 reportedly attempted smuggling scenarios of contraband via drone at the Washington State Prison in Davisboro has resulted in the arrest of 34 suspected criminals.

Last week, at early midnight on Thursday, November 9, Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies were alerted of a potential ongoing contraband drop.

When responding to the scene in Davisboro, deputies located a “suspicious” vehicle in the area of Highway 231 and South Sparta Davisboro Road.

After a deputy’s attempt to pull over the car, the vehicle fled the scene and was pursued onto Highway 88 into Jefferson County.

“Due to the high levels of speed, dangerous driving, and several felonies committed, my deputy decided to perform a PIT maneuver on the vehicle,” said Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran.

A PIT, or Precision Immobilization Technique, Maneuver is a procedure used by a law enforcement personnel’s vehicle to force a fleeing vehicle to abruptly turn 180 degrees, thus causing the vehicle to stall and stop.

“Our deputy performed a PIT on the vehicle once he deemed it safe and when no other vehicles were present in the area,” said Sheriff Cochran. “The PIT was completed causing the vehicle to spin, exit the roadway, and enter a ditch and embankment.”

The Georgia State Patrol was the requested by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the accident.

Inside of the vehicle, a drone and further contraband was located by assisting officers.

The Georgia Department of Corrections was also able to secure the earlier smuggled contraband at the Washington State Prison.

Jonquez Jackson and Travis Calloway were arrested at the scene.

According to the Sheriff, they now each face a litany of felony charges.

Jackson already possessed an outstanding felony warrant for aggravated assault on a police officer in Richmond County. Calloway held a warrant in Richmond County for possession of dangerous drugs and a felony warrant in Tattnall County for possession of items prohibited by inmates.

“It continues to be our mission to make every effort to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our community,” said Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran. “We do not take it lightly when individuals enter our community to commit crimes and bring danger to our citizens. Thank you to our deputies and others that tirelessly work in supporting our efforts.”
