Three final arrests were made last week in the year-long series of thwarted drone drops at the Washington State Prison in Davisboro.

As a part of “Operation Flight Cancelled,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department took a trio of individuals into custody for an attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison via an unmanned aerial vehicle from a location across the Washington County/Jefferson County line.

Tylub-Deen El-Amin, age 34, of Columbia, South Carolina and 17-years-olds Derek Spugeon and Harvey Simpson of Augusta were arrested on-site.

Tobacco, narcotics, cell phones, and phone chargers were among the apprehended illicit items, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Gary Hutchins.

The investigation into the situation is on-going and additional arrests are anticipated.

Last year, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported 37 arrests stemming from 15 attempted contraband drone drops at the Washington State Prison. The latest apprehensions in Jefferson County bring the reported total number of related arrests to 40 in 2023.
