The City of Sandersville is providing children and their parents with some after-school plans during Georgia Cities Week.
Today, on Monday, April 22, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Sandersville Police Department is holding host to their “Read with a Cop” event, offering sweet treats and story time with an officer at the Police Department in Downtown Sandersville.
Across the street on Wednesday, April 24, also from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Sandersville Fire Department is “fighting fires with ice cream,” providing free ice cream and tours of a fire truck at the Fire House.
In its 25th annual observance, Georgia Cities Week is designed to recognize the services that city governments provide while attempting to contribute to a better quality of life.
“City government is truly government of, by, and for the people,” said Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews. “The people who are making the decisions about our community are your neighbors, local business owners, and community leaders. We are in this together, and we all want our city to thrive.”
Throughout the week, the sponsoring Georgia Municipal Association encourages cities to accomplish the following:
– Share information with citizens about the services they provide to residents, including a look into city operations and how the city can positively impact their quality of life
– Highlight successful community projects and infrastructure enhancements
– Connect residents with one another
– Build or improve working relationships with state leaders and legislators
Last year, more than 160 Georgia cities participated in the week’s activities in some capacity.
“We recognize that throughout our lifetimes, the average person will have more direct contact with local governments than with state or federal governments,” said Mayor Andrews. “Because of this, we feel a responsibility to ensure that the public knows how the city operates and feels connected to their city government.”
