Next Tuesday, the Washington County Farm Bureau will sponsor a public meeting to discuss an array of tax-related topics – including the recent property tax assessment notices from the Washington County Tax Assessors Office.

The question-and-answer session will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Washington County Ag Center.

A Farm Bureau “tax expert” will be prepared to speak on conservation use valuation assessments, homestead exemptions, the recently passed and signed House Bill 581, county tax assessments, and the appeals process.

As previously reported by WACO 100, the Washington County Board of Commissioners recently took to social media to explain that the County experienced a required reassessment of real property that resulted in significant increases in value for many property owners.

The Board stated that this reevaluation is based on recent sales data.

Along with the notice, citizens also received an “estimated tax” based on last year’s millage rate.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education will each set the new millage rates this summer, resulting in property owner’s actual tax bill.

Commissioners state that they expect the County maintenance and operations millage rate to be adjusted downward to only generate the revenue needed to fund the fiscal year 2025 maintenance and operations budget, which did not increase over FY2024.

According to the Commissioners, property owners in the recently created Special Fire District will see a tax increase to fund the new Rural Fire Services annual budget.

The Washington County Board of Assessors held a meeting in April to discuss the property value reevaluation.

Again, the Q&A session, sponsored by the Washington County Farm Bureau, will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Washington County Ag Center at 882 Grady Mertz in Tennille.
