Yesterday, an in-custody man died at the Washington County Jail.
According to Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran, the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell by a jailer just after 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25.
Emergency medical services were immediately called and dispatched to the scene. Upon arriving, medical personnel pronounced the inmate deceased.
Per outlined policy, the Washington County Coroner’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigations were asked to investigate the death.
“An autopsy will be conducted on the inmate for an official cause of death; however, it appears that he died from a medical event due to an underlying medical condition,” said Sheriff Cochran. “He was the sole occupant of his cell at the time of the incident.”
The identity of the non-local inmate has not been revealed at this time. He was received from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office earlier this month, on June 14, for housing purposes.
