Traffic crashes across Georgia during the Independence Day holiday period resulted in 18 deaths.
The travel period spanned 102 hours from 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3 through midnight on Sunday, July 7.
Statewide, Georgia State Patrol Troopers investigated 12 fatal crashes. Local agencies oversaw the remaining 6 traffic deaths.
3 fatalities were reported by GSP Post 33 in neighboring Milledgeville.
Georgia State Patrol Troopers also investigated over 500 traffic crashes that resulted in more than 500 injuries.
Alongside Troopers, Motor Carrier Compliance Division Officers conducted over 33,000 traffic stops – handing out more than 19,400 citations, issuing over 23,000 warnings, and making 500 DUI arrests.
As previously reported by WACO 100, nearly 500 Americans lost their lives in traffic crashes over the 2023 Independence Day travel period. Preliminary findings for 2024 estimate almost 600 deaths.
Last year, 40 percent of fatalities were a result of drunk-driving incidents. One-third of those crashes were caused by a driver with a blood alcohol concentration level of almost twice the legal limit and half involved a driver between the ages of 21 to 34.
