Mr. Capers O’Dell Brazzell, age 83, of Morningside Drive in Sandersville, passed away at his residence on Friday, July 26 following an extended illness. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, August 3 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sandersville Methodist Church. Reverend Dr. Stan Littleton will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in Church Heritage Hall. Employees of Radio Station WACO 100 and members of the Tennille Rotary Club will sit as Honorary Groups.
Mr. Brazzell was born in Rockhill, South Carolina, the son of the late Cleatus O’Dell Brazzell and the late Frances McCravy Brazzell. He was reared in Easley, South Carolina where he graduated high school, excelling in academics and football. Capers attended the University of South Carolina on a football scholarship, graduating with a master’s degree in psychology. Mr. Brazzell then began his lifelong career in radio with his family’s station, WELP in Easley, while also working as an Instructor of Psychology at the Greenville Technical College. He moved to Swainsboro in the mid-1970’s to manage additional radio stations. While raising his children, Capers became active in his community coaching children’s athletics. In the mid-1990’s, Mr. Brazzell relocated to Sandersville to own and operate Radio Station WSNT/WACO 100, which he continued until his passing. Through his on-air work as host of the “Wake Up, WACO Show,” he became known as Cowboy Cape, and was a familiar personality and friend to many in Washington and surrounding counties. Capers was a member of the Sandersville Methodist Church. Mr. Brazzell was a Paul Harris Fellow and formerly served as President of the Tennille Rotary Club. He held a passion for rescuing abused dogs. Above all, Capers most cherished his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah McKamey Brazzell of Sandersville; children, Rocky Brazzell of Wilmington Island, Curry Epley of Wilmington Island, and Cameron Brazzell of Atlanta; stepchildren Matthew Kersey of Ailey, Trent Kersey of Swainsboro, and Leslie Meeks of Sandersville; 14 grandchildren; sister, Leah Katherine Burgess of Easley, South Carolina; and beloved pet, Honeydog.
