The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is set to hold a raffle to raise funds for a Sheriff’s deputy recently paralyzed following an on-duty car crash.

In early June, Deputy Gordon Alley was injured in a single-vehicle accident while responding to a call for assistance from another officer.

The call to Deputy Alley came after the officer performed a pit maneuver on a vehicle when in a high speed chase that originated near the Washington State Prison in Davisboro.

While in pursuit to the scene during a thunderstorm with heavy rains, Alley lost control of his vehicle on State Route 24 near Ridge Road when it hit a large puddle in the roadway causing the car to hydroplane. It would veer off the road and strike a tree.

Emergency personnel soon-after responded to the accident, successfully extracting the trapped deputy from the car.

Gordon Alley was originally taken to the Washington County Regional Medical Center in Sandersville before being transferred to Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta.

Doctors diagnosed him with a broken collarbone, cracked ribs, and paralysis from the waist down.

The majority of his recovery has taken place at the Shepherd Center for Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries in Atlanta, where he currently resides continuing his rehabilitation.

Late last month, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Sandersville Community Church and multiple local elected officials to host a benefit luncheon to assist with Deputy Alley’s medical costs. Over 400 plates were served to the responding community.

Now, the Sheriff’s Office is holding an enormous prize raffle to further help with the mounting bills.

The raffle will run the four weeks of August, beginning on Monday, August 5. Two prizes will be awarded via a drawing on each weekday – totaling more than 40 prizes won over the course of 20 days.

On the first three Fridays of August, a gun will serve as grand prize. On the final Friday of the month, two guns and additional high-priced items will be awarded.

Winning tickets are re-entered into the following day’s drawing, meaning participants can win multiple times.

Raffle tickets cost $25. 100 percent of the proceeds raised will benefit Deputy Gordon Alley.

Tickets may be purchased by contacting any Sheriff’s Office deputy or by messaging the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. Individuals can also buy into the raffle on Cash App at $deputymcgraw or on Venmo at wcso435. List your mailing address during an online purchase.

Doctors are uncertain if Alley will regain feeling below his waist. He is the father of a 12-year-old daughter.
