A large amount of drugs was recently seized by law enforcement during a thwarted attempt to smuggle contraband into the Washington State Prison in Davisboro.
Last Wednesday, an on-patrol deputy with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office spotted a”suspicious” vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the roadway near the prison.
The deputy reportedly observed the vehicle for a period of time prior to making contact with the driver. While the law officer was watching, an individual in the front passenger seat threw a large bag of trash out of the car window.
At that time, the Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle drove from the scene and refused to pull over.
Following a brief pursuit, the deputy successfully halted the vehicle.
An ensuing investigation of the car revealed a large quantity of drugs and additional prohibited items.
“Our team is committed to staying vigilant and proactive in efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our community,” said Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran. “We are always ready to respond and protect.”
The driver and passenger of the car in question were arrested.
45-year old Byron Gearing and 27-year-old Demarcus Morgan received felony charges for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, trafficking methamphetamine, trading with inmates without consent of warden, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Morgan was also charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, speeding, reckless driving, two counts of a stop sign violation, failure to use a turn signal, and failure to maintain lane.
Both individuals are from Atlanta.
Since the beginning of last year, over 60 arrests have been made in connection to at least 23 reported foiled attempts to smuggle contraband in to the prison in Davisboro.
