A local man is in police custody following vehicle theft that led to a transpiring high-speed chase across three counties.

Last Monday, law enforcement were alerted that a City of Sandersville Public Works vehicle was stolen from from its parked position on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Sandersville.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., Sheriff’s Office deputies fanned out to begin a search for the stolen truck. It was located traveling west on the Fall Line Freeway towards Baldwin County.

Lights and sirens were deployed in an effort to pull over the driver. He refused and continued to elude trailing officers.

The police pursuit continued through Baldwin County and into Wilkinson County.

At that time, the Georgia State Patrol assumed reins of the dangerous chase.

Once in a compliant area, a GSP Trooper performed a safe and successful PIT maneuver to bring the vehicle to a halt outside of Gordon.

The driver, 41-year-old Jerrell D. Walker of Tennille, was taken into custody without incident or injury.

He has been charged with felony theft by the taking of a government vehicle, felony fleeing to elude, reckless driving, refusal of breath of blood testing, and a myriad of traffic offenses.

Upon his apprehension, a warrant for his arrest was revealed for a probation violation in Johnson County.

Police suspect that Walker was highly under the influence of alcohol during the theft and ensuing chase.

No civilians were involved or injured in the high-speed, three-county incident.
