Katie Smith is a Senior at the Washington County High School.

Addyson Upton is a Senior at Brentwood School.

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. It recognizes high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities.

Award recipients are selected by their educators and peers for demonstrating the qualities to an outstanding degree.

The program is open to students whose schools are accredited and in good standing with their state board of education. Following selection, students are invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program that consists of a personal statement and an essay on the topic, “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.”

Addyson Upton was chosen as the Washington County DAR Scholarship Essay Contest winner. Her essay has now been submitted for judgement at the District-level.

Katie Smith and Addyson Upton have been granted monetary awards from the Governor Jared Irwin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The students were honored at a recent ceremony held by the local DAR, reading their essays to attendees. They will be further recognized during the Honors Programs at their respective schools in the spring.
