Clinical research is being held in Washington County this week.
On Thursday, February 27 and Friday, February 28, local individuals are invited to take part in a study at the Washington County Health Department.
The purpose of the multi-day trial is to assess new rapid COVID-19, flu, and RSV tests for accuracy and usability. Researchers are seeking to test samples and feedback from those currently displaying symptoms of these diseases.
Symptoms may include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea, and diarrhea.
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University, Georgia Tech, the Mercer University School of Medicine, and the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center are partnering with the National Institute of Health and Food and Drug Administration on this project.
Individuals of all ages and ethnic backgrounds are invited to join the study. Children must have guardian consent to participate.
Those involved in the study will be asked to perform a front of the nose swab on themselves. The guardian will swab the nose of those 14 years of age or younger.
A healthcare worker will then perform an additional front of the nose swab for the purpose of comparing results.
Participants may also be asked to complete an over-the-counter COVID-19, flu, or RSV home test.
For involvement in the project, contributors will be gifted a $50 Walmart gift card.
No appointments are required. This is a drive-thru sampling event. Individuals will not be asked to leave their vehicle.
Testing will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Washington County Health Department, 201 Morningside Drive in Sandersville.
