
Dr. John Robert Ward, age 79, of Tennille peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 13 at the Tennille Retirement Home. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Sandersville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
Dr. Ward was born and reared in Darlington, South Carolina, the son of the late Jay Ward and the late Elloeen Ward. He possessed a zest for life – evident in his varied interests. At an young age, John was particularly fond of running, often seen on the hospital track between rounds or around the community. Dr. Ward earned a Bachelor of Biology degree and underwent his medical internship at the University of South Carolina before general surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He was a member of the Mortez Surgical Society, American College of Surgeons, and the Southeastern Surgical College. John proudly served as his country as a Major in the United States Army. Dr. Ward dedicated more than four decades of his life to saving the lives of others. He was regarded by his colleagues, nurses, staff, and patients as a compassionate and caring physician who always put first the care of his patients. Known as a true leader and mentor, John acted as a beacon of light and hope in his community, touching countless lives through his service, kindness, and willingness to share his knowledge and experience. Dr. Ward enjoyed watching NASCAR and time spent with family at the Isle of Palms and Folly Beach – listening to Bob Dylan music with his son and dancing to the Drifters with his wife. Leaving a legacy of love, he will be remembered as a man whose warmth radiated in his every action, from careful stitches in surgery to the tender hugs he gave his son and grandsons.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 49 years, Cyndy Hartzog Ward; son, John-Robert Ward and wife Jennifer Ward; grandsons, John-Brooks Ward and Joseph Sinclair Ward; and siblings, Katherine Keckiesen and husband Tom and Billy Ward and wife Ann.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Tennille Retirement Home Special Activities Fund, 525 North Main Street, Tennille, Georgia 31089.
