According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), more than half of all fatal crashes occur following a driver crossing the edge or center-line of a roadway. Furthermore, FHWA claims that nearly two-thirds of those accidents transpire in rural areas.

Last week, with safety in mind, the Georgia Department of Transportation awarded five (5) projects totaling $5.24 million to Roadsafe Traffic Systems for the purpose of installing indentation rumble strips in 18 East Central Georgia counties. Routes will receive the strips along the center-line and/or edge-line median pavement markings. Divided highways will only see center-line highway indentions.

The following counties will see the implementation of rumble strips through the upcoming project:

– Baldwin
– Bleckley
– Burke
– Columbia
– Dodge
– Emanuel
– Hancock
– Jefferson
– Jenkins
– Laurens
– Morgan
– Oglethorpe
– Putnam
– Richmond
– Treutlen
– Washington
– Wilkes
– Wilkinson

The Georgia Department of Transportation claims that there were over 500 fatalities resulting from vehicles leaving the roadway in 2019. This figure would represent approximately one-third of all statewide roadway fatalities.

GDOT states that center-line and edge-line rumble strips have been proven to reduce head-on and road departure related incidents.
