The Washington County Board of Education was recently recognized by the Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) as a 2020 ‘Distinguished School Board.’
Washington County School Superintendent Dr. Rickey Edmond announced this achievement during the Thursday, December 10 Board of Education meeting.
“It is my great honor and privilege to present this to the great governance team,” said Dr. Edmond. He added, “Your work and dedication should be duly noted.”
The recognition program is designed to showcase best practices in school governance and leadership. GSBA recognizes good school board governance to foster educational community cultures in order to advance student learning and achievement.
During the December 10 meeting, Board members were shown a video presentation, recognizing them for their commitment to “developing the whole child.”
Sandra McMaster, Finance Director for the Washington County Board of Education, presented the Board with the ‘Distinguished School Board’ plaque from the Georgia School Board Association.
“We are fortunate to have all of you as Board members,” said McMaster, adding, “We are blessed to have such a highly functioning, involved Board.”
Serving on the Washington County School Board are: Chairman Chris Hutchings, Paul Turner for District 1, Gladine Thompson for District 2, Tracy Giddens for District 3, and Sammie Knight for District 4.
Washington County School Board met and/or exceeded the criteria set forth by GSBA to earn the honor of a 2020 Distinguished Board.
The GSBA Governance Team Recognition Program was developed by Georgia superintendents and board members based on the state board of education’s standards for effective governance to recognize distinguished leadership.
In 1998, the Georgia School Boards Association was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of education.
The GSBA Board recognition program is a three-tiered program.
