It’s déjà vu for Washington County Golden Hawks football fans, as for the second consecutive week, the much anticipated and highly awaited return of Golden Hawks football has been delayed by 7 days.
The Washington County game versus rival Thomson scheduled for Friday, September 2 was cancelled on Thursday evening. A social media post from the Washington County High School cited Thomson High School participating in a 14-day shutdown due to COVID-19 as the cause.
Thomson will lose their next two games versus WACO and Ware County as a result.
For Washington County, the Hawks will again lose their season opener. On Wednesday, August 25, the Golden Hawks and Baldwin High School opted to postpone their rivalry matchup set for Friday, August 27. A rescheduled date has not been set.
This now marks the second consecutive season that Head Coach Joel Ingram will lead his team into action for the first time during the second week of September. Last year, COVID caused the latest start date in Hawks history when WACO opened their season on September 11. Washington County is set to play one day earlier this year when the Golden Hawks will once again attempt to open their regular season versus Swainsboro at the House of Pain on Friday, September 10 when debuting their new scoreboard.
Of additional schedule-altering note, in a desire to add a game to a schedule that was would soon lack two of its 10 original games, Washington County came to an agreement with Perry High School earlier in the week to play a game at Perry on Friday, October 8. This date was first designated as an OFF day on the Hawks schedule.
The game against the Perry Panthers will provide an interruption to the WACO region schedule which begins two weeks prior versus Lamar County.
