The City of Sandersville recently proclaimed Sunday, November 7 as Retired Educators’ Day in Sandersville.

Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews presented the Washington County Retired Educators Association with a proclamation honoring the more than 135,000 retired educators in Georgia. An estimated 31,000 of those retired educators are members of the Georgia Retired Educators Association.

“The retired educators of Georgia donate thousands of hours of volunteer service and make invaluable contributions to the welfare of their respective communities across the state,” said Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews.

Mayor Andrews went on to say that it is appropriate that a day be designated for citizens to express their appreciation for the contributions that retired educators have made and continue to make for the betterment of human lives and for society.

It was also noted that on Retired Educators’ Day, local churches will recognize the lasting contributions made by retired educators in the community.

With the proclamation, the citizens of Sandersville are asked to observe the day, November 7, in an appropriate manner honoring retired educators.

In addition, Governor Brian Kemp also proclaimed Sunday, November 7 as Retired Educators Day in Georgia.

“Retired educators touched and influenced the lives of generations of young people, motivating and inspiring their students to use the innate talents and abilities to the fullest, prompting them to become responsible, contributing citizens,” said Governor Kemp. He added, “Retired educators possess valuable knowledge and are able to use their vast experience and skill to enrich the education process in varied settings, often continuing to be major source of insight and direction in education for our state and nation.”

Georgia Retired Educators Association (GREA) began in 1958 as Georgia Retired Teachers Association. The organization has evolved, through forty-seven years of specialization and diversity of educational roles, and adopted its current name in 1998 to better describe the membership potential. GREA continues to be the only organization that concentrates exclusively on the needs of Georgia retired educators.
