Washington County Political Candidate Forum Scheduled for Tuesday, April 26

Washington County voters will soon have the opportunity to publicly hear from candidates for the upcoming elections to the Board of Commissioners, Board of Education, and Sandersville City Council.

The Washington County Chamber of Commerce is holding a Political Candidate Forum at the Oconee Fall Line Technical College on Tuesday, April 26.

A Meet-and-Greet will take place at 5:30 p.m. The Forum will follow at 6:00 p.m.

Local candidates qualified for the May 24 General Primary Election from Monday, March 7 through Friday, March 11.

Qualifying for the Board of Education were the following:

– Chairperson: Robert Blocker, Jr. and Randy Mayberry
– District One: Dr. Alan Gray and Thomas (Tadpole) Pulliam
– District Two: Kristi Jenkins, John (Zack) Webb, and Shanika Wilcher
– District Three: Leigh Jordan with no opposition
– District Four: Mary Y. Hodges, Nathan C. Hodges, and Melvin Williams

Qualified candidates for Board of Commissioners include:

– Chairperson: Horace Daniel
– District One: Doug Watkins
– District Two: Edward Burten, Jr. (Incumbent), Christian Cobb, and Bobby Jackson
– District Three: James Hitchcock
– District Four: Frank “Bossman” Simmons, Jr.

City of Sandersville District Four voters will elect a new City Councilperson. As previously reported by WACO 100, the seat was vacated with the November 2021 resignation of Jason Davis, who moved outside the City limits. The elected Councilperson will serve the remainder of Davis’ unexpired four-year term.

Two individuals qualified for the Sandersville City Council District Four seat:

– Emory “Ben” Salter
– Tammy Wilcher Stevens

The Chamber of Commerce will moderate the April 26 Political Candidate Forum. Candidates have been presented a set of forum rules and procedures for adherence during the event.

Public questions are encouraged for the Forum. They must be submitted in writing during the Meet-and-Greet Session and prior to 6:00 p.m. Floor questions during the event will not be allowed.

The deadline for voter registration or change of address for the General Primary Election is Monday, April 25.

Early voting will take place from Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 20.

The mandatory Saturday voting will take place on May 7 and May 14.

Election Day is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24 with polls open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
